Questions about paralleling MIE1W0505BGLVH

Hi,

We are using MIE1W0505BGLVH-3R-Z isolated DC/DC converter in all our PCB designs. Right now, we would like to ask if it is possible to parallel the outputs of two this DC/DC converter by using the methods of ballast resistor for parallel LDO design.

Thanks.

Regards,

Eric

Hello,

This is not within the typical application of the MIE1W0505BGLVH-3R-Z, it would be possible. You would just need to be careful of some of the following things:

  • If the outputs are to be truly isolated, they cannot share a common ground or load. Otherwise, isolation may be compromised. Ballast resistors won’t address this fully.
  • If there is a slight voltage mismatch in the DC/DC outputs, this may lead to uneven current sharing. Ballast resistors would help equalize this mismatch at the cost of efficiency.
  • Be sure to size these ballast resistors in a way where there will be an acceptable voltage drop relative to the nominal current that is expected through each ballast resistor.

Hopefully this provided some insight on your approach. Be wary of the possible issues if you proceed with this solution.

Best,
Krishan
