Over Current Protection of MP2316

Hi Support member.

Please teach me over current protection of MP2316.

When MP2316 start protected by over current?

Date sheet only written high_side FET current min value.
Please teach me typical and maximum values.

Best regards.

Hi ryota_arihara,

I’m working with our product line to define exactly when the OCP is triggered for the MP2316.

Just some guy here, looks like the specify the minimum OCP level so you can work backwards and be sure you get the 3A current out of the circuit. It would be nice if they specified a maximum level as that would allow you to pick an inductor that wouldn’t saturate. As it stands maybe the maximum level is 28Amps ( unlikely) .

The device is rated for 3A output , and depending on the inductor value you can safely have a peak inductor ripple current to 5A, above that the current limit may be triggered, so that will limit the min inductor value, plus some margin for transient response. The 5A min current limit value is needed for this aspect of the design. The max value of current limit isn’t listed as you noted, and the current limit itself isn’t trimmed and has a wide range, so can be as high as 9A or a bit more with normal tolerances (a 1.4x multiplier is common for untrimmed functions like this). The inductor would be chosen for a sat current higher than that for peak current, but when tripped the current limit will go into hiccup mode and minimize thermal dissipation. Many designers forego the short circuit condition if their circuit is in a physical space minimizing access to bare conductors.
