I am designing a board with solenoid valve drivers; where each solenoid has an inductance of 1H. I am considering the MPQ5872 for this application.
The solenoid valves have a fast turn-off requirement, meaning that I must allow a negative voltage (up to -30 to -40V) to develop across the solenoid and cannot use a freewheeling diode which clamps the negative voltage to Vf. Instead, I should use a (bidirectional TVS) voltage clamp across the load.
This chip datasheet recommends a freewheeling diode, GND network, and series resistors to the MCU when driving large inductive loads. Can it work with the bidirectional TVS instead of the freewheeling diode? Ordered some to test/prototype but any info on recommendation solution here would be helpful.
