MPQ4242 QC Mode Issue

Hello,

I have a design using the MPQ4242 as the charge controller for a USB-A port, which is required to support QC3 charging modes, however when testing with the Passmark PM125 USB PD tester the device only appears to advertise the outputs as QC2 modes, and when testing with devices advertised as supporting QC3 (LG-V20) the MPQ4242 stays in BC1.2 mode.

We received the following information from Passmark regarding how their tester detects the QC modes:
“The method used to differentiate between QC2 and QC3 support on the PM125 is to first try request ~6.6V from the charger during the detection process, if the charger outputs the correct voltage then we know it supports QC3 (200mV increments). This means the likely reason it is appearing as QC2 is because the charger does not output the 6.6V at the time it is expected during the connection process.”

Are there any known issues with QC3 modes with the MPQ4242?

Hi jsmith,

I will take a this issue and can get back to you on this as soon as possible.
In the meanwhile, can you send the schematic and the layout that you designed for this, we can also review that.

Regards,
Adhish

Good morning Adhish,

Please see below the image of the relevant portion of the schematic, if layout is a concern I can DM with the gerber files, otherwise we don’t have layout concerns at this time.

Please let me know what you find out regarding the QC modes, thanks!

Regards,

JSmith

Hello, we are still trying to resolve this issue. Is there any feedback on the QC mode operation or our design?

Hi Jsmith,

Apologies for the delay in the response. We are looking into this, Can you share the test waveforms of DP,DM and Vbus pins?

Adhish
