MPM54304 maximum load capacitance

Please clarify:

  1. What is the max limit on ceramaic output capacitance on each rail of MPM54304 (vout1-4)?
  2. Is there a requirement on minimum ESR ?

Hi Ashok,
Thank you for utilizing MPSnow Technical Forum,

  1. Typically, 2 output capacitors should suffice per rail. You can also add an extra placehold footprint just in case, to add a low ESR capacitor to help with lowering the ripple.

  2. This is application specific; you can utilize the equations listed in the datasheet to identify what ESR works best for you. Refer Output Capacitor equations on Pg 38.

Can you please clarify the “value” of max load capacitance . Datasheet p38 doesn’t provide a maximum capacitance or Minimum Esr. However it says “The characteristics of the output capacitor also
affect the stability of the regulation.”. So I am interested to know, with a total of 250uF capacitance (ceramic) on the output rail (bulk caps near various ICs) would MPM54304 be stable?

Hi Ashok,
Our apologies, we unfortunately do not have data for ESR or max threshold capacitance for this device.

The device output should remain stable, and this can be tested. I have seen other test cases where the total capacitance on the rails were much higher than 250uF.
