MP8017 transformer audible noise problem

Hello,

We designed a small PoE system using MP8017.
It’s pretty much a 1:1 copy of the 12V eval kit.

It works well, but there is a problem with audible noise. It starts on ± 4W of load and is louder and louder with bigger loads.

Surprisingly, the noise is also on the eval board from MPS (EVL8017-L-00A)

Is it possible to remove the noise? Or is it normal that the noise is even on the eval board?

Thank you in advance for your help

Hi jakub.vanek,

Welcome to the MPS forums!

In peak or valley control mode converters, typically when current control command is fixed in place, change in frequency results in inductor/transformer current ripple amplitude, which creates rippling output voltage, which can couple to other circuitry causing audible noise issue.

This can be reduced with having an optimized PCB layout, proper ceramic capacitors and transformer design.

What is your expected audible noise requirements? Can you share your current noise waveform?

Hi jakub.vanek,

Looks like we already have an webinar showing how to reduce the audible in DC-DC power supplies. Attaching the link here for your reference.

This might be of some help for you.
