MP5056 Power Usage

Hi, I am wondering if I am missing something obvious with the power dissipation on the MP5056.

The Rdson is at most 12mR and assuming 6A that should be P=IxIxR which is 0.432W and the Iq of the device is max 2mA which accounts for another 0.048W @ 24Vin.

So why does the Power Loss vs. Output Current graph suggest that at 16V and 6A power loss is 0.900W? Also why is the power loss so dependant on the input voltage? Its only loss should be the voltage drop across the Rdson?

Hi Steven,

Your calculations are correct for ideal power loss, the majority of the losses should come from the RDson voltage drop. The power loss calculation for the entire IC solution will be more complex as the Power Loss vs Output Current graph takes into account trace resistance, capacitor ESR, etc during testing.
