The MP5048A datasheet indicates that it is continuous 4A @ 25C. It later says 5A continuous worst case. The short circuit protection is stated at 6.85A. Can the part really handle 5A with appropriate heatsinking and thermal control?

MP5048A can handle 5A current. However 5A is the maximum continuous output current.
Ideally you do not want operate a part at the maximum output for longer periods of time.
