I am designing a LED backlight solution with MP3384L. Input voltage is 5V while maximum output voltage is 42V. LED current is 20mA for each string and we use two strings. How to calculate proper inductor value for the application? We want to optimize our layout spacing so we would like to calculate inductance by our own.

For best efficiency, minimize the DC resistance of the inductor, and choose L such that the device stays in CCM.
Please also refer to the layout guidelines that is given at the end of datasheet.
