MP28167-A VCC LDO max output current?

Hi!

Is there some maximum number for the output current of the internal 3.6V LDO of the MP28167-A?

There is one line in the datasheet
VCC load regulation Condition: ICC = 10mA

From this I can conclude that it should be possible to supply at least 10mA. What’s the limit of that?

Thanks a lot!

Hello oleg.endo,

I could look into this. What current are you hoping it can supply?

It is important to keep in mind this is also being used for the majority of the internal circuitry. From other devices I have seen it used as a pull-up rail for PG pins.

Hi,

Thanks for picking this up!

I’d like to use the built-in LDO to power an MCU for USB-C port control and some power monitoring and control, some UART comms and an RGB LED. The estimated MCU power budget is ~16 mA. LED is just for status indication, so perhaps ~5 mA will be needed.

In another design based on MP2762A, I’ve used its LDO output for exactly that. Its datasheet explicitly states it can supply 3.6V/50mA max. In practice, there’s a little bit of droop on the MCU supply rail, depending on its activity, but it’s not a real issue as it stays within limits.

I was hoping to be able to avoid an additional external LDO in the MP28167A design in the same way.

Thanks again for looking into it.

Still waiting for the team to get back to me. I have followed up and will update you

Thanks for staying on it.

Hello oleg.endo,

It seems that this can function with a similar current range as MP2762A. If your current requirements are higher than this, I would refrain from using it in this way.

Hi!

Alright. Thanks for checking and confirming it. I will report back my findings here once I have the first working prototypes.
