MP2790 current capability

Hi,

I think about using the MP2790 for a high power application. I´d suggest, that it just depends on the number of parallel MOSFETS and the value of the shunt. But in the datasheet on the first page it´s written: Drives up to 100A DC…. why this limitation? Because of MOSFET gate driving capability or what else?

Best regards,

Achim

Hello Achim,

The MP2790 current limit for the HS N-Channel MOSFET Driver was established based on testing and characterization under various operating conditions. The 100A DC is the maximum current that can be safely handled by the MP2790 while maintaining its intended performance characteristics.

I hope this is helpful.

Edgar

Hi Edgar,

about which “performance characteristics” are you talking? I must admit, that I still not understand this limitation…

Achim

Hello Achim,

Sorry for the delay response here.

The current limitation was set based on the thermal resistance of the device. The 100A DC was the maximum current at which the device was tested while keeping the operating temperature within its recommended operating conditions (Max 85 degC).

Best,
Edgar

I don’t understand this limitation either (and our application will surely exceed it). That drive current doesn’t actually run through the 2790, right? It only runs through the external FETs and the sense resistor.
