MP2787 power supply

I’m developing a series pack of supercapacitors with a MP2787 to monitor and balance the cells. I’d like to keep the MP2787 powered at lower total pack voltages than the internal UVLO allows.

Two questions:

  1. Can I remove the external BJT connected to REGCTRL and connect a 5v linear regulator to the REGIN pin? This regulator would be powered by the pack.

  2. Can this regulator be powered by an external supply for testing without damaging the MP2787? Is there any risk to the MP2787 if the REGIN pin stays powered as the pack voltage goes to zero?

Thanks!

Chris

Hello chris.baird,

I will check in with our team and get back to you.

Hello chris.baird,

I spoke with our team, and they said this should be possible. However, they said that you should also consider that there is minimum VTOP voltage that must be sustained. The device will shut down if it falls below this.

You should consider having a way to power it with a higher input voltage and a lower input voltage. Using an or diode to switch between.

Thank you kindly. I will give this a try.
