MP2696B Operation

Hello,

I am in the process of designing a product that would use the MP2696B. I have 2 questions regarding the operation of this part:

  1. Is it capable of charging and boosting at the same time? i.e. if IN can supply 2A, can it charge the battery at 0.5A and supply SYS with 5V 1A?

  2. If the load at SYS does not have USB signaling i.e. simple load that draws 5V 3A, what should be done with the DP/DM pins? Can they be left floating?

Thank you for your help,
WW

Hello,

Thanks for reaching out.

To answer your questions:

  1. No, this part does not have NVDC capability, so you will not be able to charge and boost to supply V_SYS at the same time. This part can only do one at a time.

If you are looking for an IC that can use the input voltage to supply the battery and use the battery to supply the system, I would recommend a part with power path management capabilities, such as the MP2624A or MP2770.

Here is a summary of power path management. I have included a snippet I believe outlines the functionality you are asking about:

  • When the input source is applied, VSYS is regulated by the input DC/DC converter or LDO. Simultaneously, VSYS provides a charge current to the battery through the battery FET. In this charging mode, priority is given to the system load, and the remaining power is used for charging. The charge current is adjusted dynamically based on input source capability and system load level, achieving a minimum charge time.
  1. Typically, when not using pins on a USB interface it is advised to leave them floating.

Hope this answers your questions.

Hello Stephen,

Thank you for the detailed answer and additional information on NVDC. I will look into the suggested part and related parts with the NVDC feature for my design.
