looking at using a MP2696 in a system with a single LiPoFe4 non replaceable 18650 battery.
Do we need a discrete protection device on the battery or the features of the MP2696 make a external protection device redundant?

and welcome to the MPS forum.
MP2696 already offers a lot of protection feature, such as JEITA-compatible charging-profiles, programmable safety thresholds and of course, also NTC temperature sensing directly on the battery.
MP2696 also reports the current status of your battery through the I2C interface to your system-MCU.
Depending on your requirements, if no redundant protection is necessary, the safety features are already sufficient to protect your batteries health together with environmental safety.
