MP2617H - Applying 3.3V to VCC Externally

Hi There. My company is developing a robotic product using the MP2617H. We are currently using VCC voltage as a reference to read battery temperature; however, when charging is ended, the chip no longer supplies VCC voltage. We are considering supplying 3.3V externally to the VCC net to continue monitoring when the chip is not charging. The connection would be through a Schottky diode to avoid power conflict. We are unsure if this is safe to do and would like your opinion. Is it safe to supply 3.3V to VCC externally?

Thank you

Hello,

Yes, absolutely. Externally supplying the VCC pin using a Schottky diode is a safe way of maintaining power when the MP2617H stops supplying it with the internal LDO.

Just be sure you choose a Schottky diode with proper voltage / current ratings. A typical forward drop of 0.2V to 0.4V should be fine. Also ensure that the stability of this external source is ensured where any noise is bypassed and well filtered.

Best,
Krishan
