Current limit calculation for MP5014A

Hi there,

We are planning to use the MP5014A in one of our designs and aim to set the current limit to approximately 300mA. However, based on the table and graph provided in the datasheet, we are unable to determine how to achieve a hold current of around 300mA. Could anyone provide a formula to calculate value of RLimit or offer any other suggestions?

Hello,

The MP5014A current limit hold limits are from ~1A to ~5A according to the datasheet. To achieve the current limit, you are looking for I can recommend the MP5042 or similar. The ILIMIT threshold can be set between 25mA and 2A. It is a similar size and package as the MP5014A.

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for getting back to me on this.
Could you provide the quick comparison between these two parts? I would like to see pros and cons of using this new part over MP5014A.

Regards,
Ibram

Hi Ibram,

Here is a quick summary of some key differences:

Input:
5042: 4.2V to 28V
5014A: 10 V to 13.8 V

Package:
5042: TSOT23-6
5014A: TSOT23-8

Rlimit vs Output Current:
5042:

5014A:

Output Current Limits:
5042: The maximum load at the output is current-limited. The current limit (ILIMIT) magnitude is controlled by an external resistor connected between ILIMIT and GND. The ILIMIT threshold can be set between 25mA and 2A.

5014A: The maximum load at the output is current limited. This is accomplished by utilizing a sense FET topology. The magnitude of the current limit is controlled by an external resistor from I-LIMIT to SOURCE.

Additional differences include the IC behavior during OCP, SCP, and thermal protections which can be found in the application section of the datasheet.
